Chalk
The integration of technology and e-Learning environments brings an added value to traditional classroom learning. Effective use of course management tools plays an integral part in developing quality online education.
Chalk, as it is known on campus, is a learning management tool that uses the Blackboard Academic Suite of software to provide a common easy-to-use framework for faculty to develop and disseminate course materials to students. Each day of the academic year an average of 5000 visitors view 150,000 pages and download over 25GB of content from Chalk. During the last academic year, almost 3200 courses were delivered to over 13,000 students, both graduate and undergraduate, across nearly all divisions and schools.
Using Chalk
Chalk provides students with unlimited access to course materials, enhances student-to-student and faculty-to-student communication, accommodates different learning styles, and provides increased opportunities for student exploration. In addition, the system hosts threaded discussion boards, acts as a course communication center with announcements, course calendars, and email utilities, and provides simple drop-box capabilities that allow students to submit assignments over the network.
Any person with a valid CNetID and password can log in to chalk.uchicago.edu and review the syllabi of courses that interest them.
If you have a question about whether a course you are taking is hosted on Chalk, please ask your instructor.
