Computing Classrooms and Clusters

Over the past several years, there has been a shift in how people use computing facilities at the University of Chicago. Once thought of as merely places to check email and write a paper, computing clusters are now becoming extensions of the classroom. Computer-based classrooms are no longer exclusively used by NSIT for skills training, but are now being consumed by academic courses. In fact, more and more professors are taking advantage of computers in learning, and are exploring ways to more closely integrate "live" applications (as opposed to canned courseware) in the teaching and learning process. As a result, computing clusters and computer-based classrooms are moving away from being technology "barns" and evolving into computer-based learning environments.

The NSIT Computing Classrooms & Clusters group develops, manages, and maintains computer-based learning environments and general-purpose computing spaces at the University of Chicago. This includes the various campus-wide computing facilities such as the USITE computing clusters, campus WebStations, and computer-based technology classrooms. These facilities can be used in numerous ways, and the staff of the CCC group can assist in identifying, tailoring, and using computer-based facilities to enhance classroom learning.

Printing is available in USITE for a fee.
